Berkeley Police Department recovered a World War II era, French military training hand grenade from a residence on Spruce Street Tuesday afternoon.

About 4 p.m., Berkeley police received a report of a potentially explosive device on the 1200 block of Spruce Street discovered in a planter box, according to a BPD crime alert.

The department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team recovered the training hand grenade — which had been excavated when some work was being done on the property — and safely disposed of it.

Despite the age of the device, it was still capable of causing injury if not properly handled, according to the crime alert. BPD encourages community members who discover potentially hazardous materials to leave them in place and contact the police.
