Although Berkeley may not be characterized as the most tropical destination, there are definitely a few prime tanning locations around the UC Berkeley campus. We at the Clog have compiled a list of perfect tanning locations, so if you’re looking for the perfect spot around campus to lie out in the sun, you’ve came to the right place!

Strawberry Canyon Pool

What better place to tan than at the Strawberry Canyon Pool. There’s a beautiful grassy area poolside that’s a perfect place to go to lie out with friends and get some rays. This place is packed on a sunny summer day, so take advantage of the great weather! Don’t forget your towel, sunscreen and your Cal ID for entry.

Memorial Glade

Yes, we know Memorial Glade doesn’t look too sunny on this early morning photograph, but we promise on a sunny day, it’s the perfect place to lie out, read a book and just relax. The best part is that when you’re done lying out, you can just pop over to Doe Library and study for your midterm! This option might not be the best location if you’re looking for a more private setting, but, hey, at least you’ll probably run into a few of your friends.

One of the many roofs in Berkeley

For some reason, the houses around the Berkeley area tend to have killer roofs, so see if any of your friends are living in a house with a roof or deck! Frat roofs have to be among the best tanning locations and a lot of students live in frats over the summer, so be sure to ask around.

Unit 1 Courtyard

The Unit 1 courtyard has this grassy patch in front of Cheney Hall that’s killer for catching those rays. Although you may get some odd looks from Unit 1’s mysterious summer residents, it’s totally worth it. This spot has been a well-kept secret among Unit 1 residents, but now with the emptiness of summer, you should take advantage of a relatively empty courtyard.

The top of the Big C

Even though the ground is kind of rocky, you’ll get a great tan while looking at a beautiful view! What more could you ask for? Plus you’re much closer to the sun (because of the altitude), so you’ll get tan even faster. Well, at least we think that’s how it works.

The middle of Channing Circle

Although this may not be very conventional, what better place is there to tan than at the center of Channing Circle? You will get a wonderful view of Greek Row, get to greet passing cars and get a tan all at the same time! Don’t forget your towel for this location, it can be a little prickly.

People’s Park

This beautiful park is your perfect Berkeley tropical oasis for those times when you just want to escape the world! The wonderful nature will provide an amazing tanning backdrop for you and your friends. On top of the aesthetic beauty of the park, you will most likely meet a few new friends!

The top of the Campanile

The top of the Campanile is one of the most well-kept secrets from tanning advocates. It’s extremely high, 307 feet that is. Yup that’s 307 feet closer to the sun. Make sure you bring some heavy-duty sunscreen, because those rays will be strong.

So maybe you won’t be dragging your swim bag to Channing Circle, but, for real, let’s get crispy this summer.
