UCPD officers arrested a 25-year-old man Wednesday on suspicion of a burglary at Unit 3 after the suspect fled from police, according to UCPD spokesperson Sgt. Sabrina Reich.

Campus staff reported the suspect, Duane Hooper, after they saw him walking through multiple buildings in Unit 3 and contacted UCPD about the suspicious activity, Reich said.

“You do need a key (to enter buildings in Unit 3), but as we know, it’s rather easy for individuals to just hold the door open,” Reich said.

When UCPD officers approached the suspect about 1 p.m., Hooper fled on foot to a nearby apartment complex on the 2400 block of Durant Avenue, according to Reich.

UCPD officers apprehended the suspect and conducted an initial search, during which they found Hooper in possession of stolen items from Unit 3, according to Reich.

UCPD later learned that there is a warrant issued out of Contra Costa County for Hooper, who is a resident of Hercules, California, and then arrested him, Reich said.
