Police mourn death of former Berkeley police officer

Police are mourning the death of a former Berkeley police officer Alan Roberds, who died July 15, as reported by Berkeleyside. He was 47.

According to Berkeleyside, Roberds was devoted to the city for more than 15 years and is remembered as both a “family man” and a “solid street cop.”

Berkeley Police Department authorized wearing black mourning bands to honor Roberds.

Berkeleyside reported that Berkeley Police Chief Andrew Greenwood sent an email to the department and the city manager July 15, writing “Preliminary information strongly indicates Alan took his own life. (Contra Costa) County Detectives are investigating this incident, and there is no further information to share at this time.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to assist with Roberds’ funeral. Roberds’ funeral is scheduled for Tuesday.

Roberds is survived by his wife Shelly and his children Matthew and Samantha, according to the campaign page.
