A guide to vegan and vegetarian bites around Berkeley

Kale me, beet me, if you want to reach me.

Listen up herbivores, this is what you’ve been waiting for. As a vegetarian, it can sometimes be tough to find good vegetarian options when you’re going out to eat. Restaurants typically try to cater to our dietary needs, but sometimes it’s just not enough. (We all know that one and only vegetarian option on the menu — a sad piece of iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato just isn’t going to cut it). This guide has real food, and good food at that. Compiled in a list below are some of our favorite vegetarian- and vegan-friendly spots to grab a bite. Even your non-herbivore friends will enjoy it!

Sweetgreen $

Located on Northside, this salad joint is definitely worth the walk. Sweetgreen offers a variety of salads and warm bowls with the option to even build your own — think Chipotle, but for salads. They also have some seasonal salads and bowls, so you know that you’re getting the freshest ingredients. We recommend the Shroomami warm bowl or the kale Caesar salad with any of their agua frescas. Some of the options do come with meat, but you can easily swap them out for portobello mushrooms or tofu. If fresh and seasonal salads aren’t going to win you over, they have free bread — I mean, who doesn’t love bread.

Tip: They recently switched over to a card-only system to increase efficiency, so make sure you have your credit or debit card with you!

Organic Greens  $

At the corner of Center and Kittredge streets, Organic Greens offers a wide selection of juices, smoothies, sandwiches and salads. The Early Morning Boost juice and Vegan V salad is the perfect combination to give you the perfect midday boost. Along with salads and sandwiches, they also have zoodles — spiralized zucchini in the shape of noodles. If you’re craving a good salad that isn’t as far as Sweetgreen, this is the place.

The Butcher’s Son $

This vegan delicatessen is the place to be, especially during weekend brunch! The Butcher’s Son offers 100 percent vegan options to the herbivores of Berkeley. From salads, sandwiches and baked goods, The Butcher’s Son serves delicious vegan takes on classics such as chicken parmesan, turkey pesto sandwiches and even BLTs. A Caesar salad with fried chicken strips or a spicy chicken BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato) is truly what dreams are made of.

Urban Remedy  $$

More of a grab ‘n’ go joint, Urban Remedy is your one stop shop for healthy and vegan and vegetarian bites. Just a quick ride down College Avenue on the 51B, Urban Remedy offers an assortment of options from meals like vegan Pad Thai to snacks such as banana brittle or a Happy Belly green juice. There are also concentrated wellness shots available for a shot of natural feel-good boost. Inflamm-relieve is the perfect combination of pineapple and ginger — it burns so good. Feel good about feeding your body all-natural and fresh ingredients, because “food is healing.

So grab your friends, herbivores or not — we guess they can come too — and check out these vegan- and vegetarian-friendly spots around Berkeley!
