BART police officers disbanded a homeless encampment and placed a fence around the area of 63rd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way early Wednesday morning.
BART previously issued two eviction notices against two homeless encampments near the Ashby BART station on Adeline Street, the “Here There” encampment and a second, unassociated encampment. While the “Here There” encampment was given a temporary allowance to stay on the land for one week by a judge’s ruling and some people had already vacated the area, the second encampment was evicted.
According to a statement from BART, the eviction proceeded “without any arrests or civil disturbances.”
There were some BPD officers on site during the eviction for traffic control and team security, according to BPD spokesperson Andrew Frankel.
Homeless advocate Guy “Mike” Lee said that generally, people do not camp on BART property because of poor relations between the homeless community and BART police officers. With the worsening weather, however, he said he encourages people to seek shelter where they can.
“People need to be able to survive the winter, so I don’t have a problem with people taking over BART or Caltrain property,” Lee said.
