It’s only February, but you’ve already been nagged by the ghosts of Fall Past, Spring Present and Summer Future.

“When are you getting an internship?” your over-achieving friend asks you. (Somehow, they’ve had five already, and they’re only a sophomore).

“Have you found any good research opportunities yet?” your GSI asks after discussion, and you feel bad letting them down, again, with some mumbling excuse.

“Tell me you’ve at least found something to do this summer? A job? Summer classes? Anything?” your mom wants to know when she calls you. You usually mumble something about how exploitative the labor system is just so she’ll hang up first.

It can all become a little overwhelming.

“Hasn’t anyone heard of midterms?” you cry to an uncaring Oski. “Can’t anyone just be a student anymore?”

But no, my sweet summer children, it appears you cannot.

Luckily for you, there are plenty of opportunities you can take advantage of in the upcoming weeks and months until this impending summer.

First and foremost: The 2018 Internship and Summer Job Fair
Hosted from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb. 22 in the Pauley Ballroom in Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union, this fair boasts all kinds of impressive and interesting employers. Come by to get an in-person look at potential summer internships and jobs in the Bay Area. Wednesday will host primarily engineering, science and tech opportunities while Thursday will have business, public and nonprofit opportunities.

Looking for research opportunities?

Check out this list on the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarships’ (OURS) website. Here, you’ll find current postings of research opportunities and internships for undergraduates all listed in one spot. They also include a list of opportunities for students who will be away from Berkeley during the summer too, so why not check and see if you can find something close to home?

Is something academic more your style? Why not get a summer minor?

Why not take advantage of the opportunity to get a full minor in one to two summers? As of last summer, you can complete a minor in one of eight fields focused on child development, digital humanities, education, multilingual education, race and law, global public health and sustainability. Many of these minors also include potential for a scholarship upon completion of the minor, as an added bonus.

Last but certainly not least: visit the Study Abroad office

Look into the many exciting opportunities offered this summer, including the potential to study abroad for your major and fulfill language and breadth requirements. You can even gain some valuable work experience in the Berkeley Global Internships Program. Check it out online, or go speak to one of the amazing counselors and peer advisors. There’s financial aid advising specifically for study abroad available as well.

So, though you may feel the pressure of summer responsibilities riding on your shoulders, know that there are many ways to explore some opportunities that this summer has to offer. Remember to relax! You can do it, Bears!
