Union workers, about 60 in number, protested outside of California Memorial Stadium on Saturday as hundreds of students and parents streamed in for spring general commencement.

On May 7, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California, withdrew from delivering the commencement address in support of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 union’s three-day strike, which lasted from May 7 to May 9.

AFSCME organized the strike to protest a contract between the union and the UC Office of the President that included terms that were not approved by the union.

Chancellor Carol Christ was slated to be commencement speaker after Harris withdrew. Christ was also the commencement speaker for the winter 2017 commencement.
