Whether you’re still working the grind this summer by taking classes, working that cash register, interning your butt off or just taking a break, forgetting a certain little holiday can happen to anyone.

Father’s Day snuck up on us all.

Now before you rush off to buy one of the last remaining Hallmark cards and a “World’s Greatest Grandpa” mug, the Clog is here to tell you to back away from the knick-knacks, paddy whack and throw your dad a bone he’ll really love.

1. Movie tickets. Whether your dad is definitely Mr. Incredible, a “Star Wars” or Marvel fan, or a suspense junkie, there are plenty of good films to take your dad out to see this weekend. “Hereditary” may not be the feel-good movie of the year, but you know your dad better than we do.
2. Sports tickets. Take your dad out to a ballgame! Admittedly basketball season is ending, but baseball season is in full swing. There’s nothing quite as American as grabbing a couple of dogs with your old man and watching them run around those plates … or something like that.
3. Home Depot gift card. Is your dad a crafty guy? Find a way to share that with him this Father’s Day and indulge in your father’s experimenting in the woodshed or out on the deck. He may not be an expert, but that’s why they make all those guides for dummies, right?
4. Starbucks gift card. Personally, my dad is a mocha man, but everybody’s got their poison. Help yours get his fix this Father’s Day — chances are he’ll appreciate it that much more coming from you.
5. His favorite food. Whether you take him out for dinner, prepare something you know he’ll love, or do the shopping to barbeque with him this Sunday, sometimes the fastest way to his heart really is through his stomach.

It can get easy to get into the habit of buying your dad the same thing every year or making excuses when you forget, but make the most of that Amazon Prime membership and send him something you think he’ll really love.

Maybe you can’t afford to get your dad all the things you think he deserves this year, but whether you’re near or far from your dad this Father’s Day, the truth is that the best gift he’s going to get from you is your time. Even if all you can afford is a FaceTime call, your dad is going to love it.

As college students, this is a strange time where we find ourselves getting simultaneously closer and farther from our parents. On the one hand, for many of us, they’re becoming our friends. On the other hand, we’re beginning to leave the nest and that period of our life where they took care of us.

Whatever your relationship with your dad is, he’s bound to love the fact that you took the time out of your own busy life to think of him and to show him how much he means to you. That’s something you can’t put a price on.
