UC Berkeley student in critical condition after being hit by alleged DUI driver

Esteban Carlos Slavitt, a 26-year-old man, was arrested by the Berkeley Police Department Monday for allegedly driving under the influence and causing injury after allegedly hitting a pedestrian, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

The pedestrian — a 21-year-old UC Berkeley student, according to Berkeleyside — was jogging on Dana Street and was struck by Slavitt’s vehicle shortly before 9:45 p.m, according to Officer Byron White, spokesperson for BPD.

At 9:45 p.m., officers responded to the situation and the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with a head injury. White stated that the pedestrian is currently in critical condition.

According to Berkeleyside, Slavitt is in custody and his next court appearance is not known.
