“Legacy. What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see,” Lin-Manuel Miranda muses as Alexander Hamilton on “The World Was Wide Enough” from the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton.”

The question of leaving a legacy at UC Berkeley can be intimidating, especially when you’re surrounded by gifted students and faculty from all backgrounds and paths. It can be hard to know how to compete when you find out your professor is a Nobel laureate, your GSI wrote for the New York Times or your classmate got an internship at Google this summer.

Luckily, we at the Clog have found several easy steps you can take to leave your mark at the No. 1 public university in the world.

1. Discover another element on the periodic table

Chemists, this one’s for you. Berkelium and the 15 other elements discovered at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are well and fine, but you know what’s a better number than 16? 17.

2. Start up a startup

Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs in between his time at UC Berkeley. You can probably squeeze something in.

3. Become an Olympian

It’s no secret that the Golden Bears have it in the bag when it comes to the summer games. If you start going to the RSF now, you may have a chance.

4. Start a protest

People give us a lot of flak for this one, but we have the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union and César E. Chávez Student Center for a reason.

5. Win a national award

Maybe a Pulitzer Prize, an Emmy or a Nobel Prize? Our faculty have awards in basically every area, so it’s time to get friendly with your professors and find out their secrets.

6. Reach for the stars

Chris Pine (James Kirk) and John Cho (Sulu) are both UC Berkeley alumni, Star Trek icons and former English majors, so arts and humanities majors — this one’s for us.

7. Become a household name through UCBMFET

OK, so all of those things are impressive, but we all know getting 1000 likes or more on UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens is the most meme-ingful way to establish your legacy at UC Berkeley.

At the end of the day, getting a degree from UC Berkeley is as much of a legacy as anything else. Remember — we’re all in this together. We all bring something special to the table, so be proud, get involved and go Bears!
