The University of California Police Department released a Nixle alert Wednesday afternoon regarding an aggravated assault in People’s Park that occurred Tuesday evening.

At about 7:37 p.m., the suspect approached the victim — who is unaffiliated with the university — took a metal pole that was inside the suspect’s satchel and struck the victim on the top right portion of his head. The suspect then dropped the metal pole and walked southbound away through the park, according to the alert.

The suspect was described as an approximately 65-year-old male with dark complexion and grey hair, wearing a black sweatshirt with grey sleeves.

The victim had minor injuries and was treated by the Berkeley Fire Department at the scene. UCPD searched the area but could not locate the suspect, the alert said.

UCPD asks anyone who has information regarding the incident to contact the UCPD Criminal Investigation Bureau at (510) 642-0472.
