Berkeley and Oakland fire departments responded and rescued an elderly woman from her burning home Wednesday, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

About 6:05 a.m., Berkeley Fire Department, or BFD, received multiple calls about a structure fire at 44 Alvarado Rd. The Oakland Fire Department, or OFD, also received calls, but according to BFD spokesperson Keith May, BFD responded on the scene first with OFD right behind.

Within three minutes of dispatch, BFD conducted a primary search and found an elderly woman in a room that was not on fire and transported her to a local hospital. May said he is unsure if the woman sustained injuries but that she could have been affected by smoke inhalation. He added that he is unsure to what extent. The woman was the only person in the home at the time of the fire, May said.

The fire filled two rooms in the home and was under control within 20 minutes, but May said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
