UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ released a statement Sunday in the wake of the Saturday Pittsburgh shooting, expressing her support for the survivors and members of the Jewish community, as well as condemning the violence against Jewish Americans.

A shooter opened fire inside a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday morning, killing 11 congregants and wounding six others, including police officers. In her statement released to the campus community about noon Sunday, Christ extended her condolences to the friends and relatives of the shooting’s victims. She also voiced her support for members of the campus community who were affected by the deaths of those in Pittsburgh.

“We are all members of the extended, global family that mourns their loss,” Christ said in the statement. “This is just the latest of what appear to be hate-driven incidents targeting people simply because of their identity, ethnicity, race, religion, or beliefs.”

Christ added that students seeking general support should contact the associate vice chancellor and dean of students. Those in need of mental health support are urged to turn to the Tang Center for assistance.
