UCPD received reports of a mountain lion sighting at the Lawrence Hall of Science on Thursday evening, according to a UCPD Nixle alert released at 9:33 a.m.

The alert states that a couple spotted the mountain lion while seated on a bench near the Lawrence Hall of Science Vista Parking Lot. The mountain lion, located near the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory fence line, “looked toward the couple and walked away,” according to the alert.

UCPD was alerted to the sighting about 6:32 p.m. Thursday.

“In the past couple of years, several sightings of mountain lions have occurred in the hills above the Berkeley campus,” the alert states.

To reduce the likelihood of a mountain lion attack, UCPD advises that hikers and joggers do not go to the Berkeley Hills alone between dusk and dawn and that hikers carry a walking stick to ward off lions if need be, according to the alert.
