Berkeley police arrest suspect in connection with civic center park stabbing

Berkeley Police Department arrested a suspect after receiving reports of a man a with stab wound sitting in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park, according to a Nixle alert released Thursday.

The victim had been stabbed in the chest, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to the alert. He was transported to a local hospital.

The alert said that shortly after locating the victim, officers arrested James Earl Blakes, 57 years old and homeless, on the south side of the park. He was detained on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violation of probation.
