A collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian was reported at 12:09 p.m at the intersection of Telegraph and Durant Avenue on Tuesday, related to a march to stop housing development on People’s Park, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

According to an email from BPD spokesperson Officer Byron White, officers spoke to several witnesses at the scene and learned that the vehicle was heading north on Telegraph Avenue and was stopped by people marching in the road.

White’s email went on to say that while the vehicle was stopped, a crowd formed around it and began pushing and banging it. To get away from the crowd, the vehicle began to drive on the northern sidewalk of Durant Avenue and while doing so, struck a bicycle in the road and a person lying on the sidewalk.

According to White’s email, the person lying on the sidewalk, confirmed to be a 55-year-old homeless man, was taken to a local hospital for an injured leg, and the driver, a 21-year-old Berkeley man, was contacted and is cooperating with investigators.
