Authorities respond to auto burglary near Berkeley Marina, arrest 2 suspects

Berkeley Police Department responded to reports of an auto burglary near Berkeley Marina on Feb. 13, according to a Nixle alert released by BPD on Wednesday afternoon.

On Feb. 13 at 5:09 p.m., authorities responded to a report of an auto burglary in the parking area of Hana Japan Steak and Seafood at 235 University Ave. According to the alert, the owner of the vehicle saw that someone had broken into her vehicle around 3:40 p.m. before leaving in a gray sedan, video surveillance from the business showed.

At about 6:37 p.m., an employee saw the same gray sedan driving in the parking lot and notified authorities. Officers who responded to the area  located the sedan driving eastbound on University Avenue and detained the two occupants. BPD arrested the driver of the sedan, a 21-year-old- male Berkeley resident, and the passenger, an 18-year-old male Berkeley resident, on suspicion of auto burglary and possession of burglary tools.

The passenger was also arrested for an unrelated series of seven residential burglaries that took place in 2018.
