Berkeley Police Department arrested a man Friday morning at Aquatic Park after he allegedly attempted to steal a woman’s cell phone, according to a Nixle alert released by BPD on Wednesday afternoon.

Two women jogging separately in Aquatic Park on Friday at 11:19 a.m. said they saw a man acting “erratically” on the pathway, the alert said. When one of the women passed the man, the latter allegedly approached the woman and cursed at her. Upon seeing this, the second jogger used her phone to take a picture of the man causing the disturbance, prompting the man to chase after her, according to the alert.

When the man caught up to the second jogger, he tried and failed to grab the woman’s cell phone as nearby onlookers intervened. When authorities arrived at the scene, they arrested the suspect, a 25-year-old man, on suspicion of attempted robbery and violation of probation.
