Berkeley police search for suspect involved in South Berkeley backpack theft

Berkeley Police Department is seeking the community’s help in locating a suspect involved in a Southside backpack theft Friday, according to a Nixle alert released by BPD on Tuesday afternoon.

A 21-year-old man standing on the 2600 block of Regent Street on Friday about 10 p.m was approached from behind by a suspect, who grabbed the man’s backpack from off of his shoulder and proceeded to run southbound on Regent Street, according to the alert.

Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a heavy build. The suspect was also wearing a black sweatshirt, according to the alert.
