While the Academy Awards’ red carpet is typically known for conventional elegance and safe fashion choices, this year’s Oscars was laden with show-stopping risks that certainly paid off. Stars from across the film industry joined to honor this year’s top productions, and they ended awards season with a bang. Here is The Daily Californian’s guide to the best-dressed celebrities at the 2019 Oscars.
Gemma Chan wearing Valentino Couture
Gemma Chan was one of the biggest breakout actors of 2018 for her role in “Crazy Rich Asians,” and it didn’t take long for her to solidify her status as a red carpet star too. At her first Academy Awards, Chan wore an extravagant bright pink gown. The dazzling dress featured a ruffled neckline and long, unstructured train that looks like it came straight off a couture runway. She complemented the dress with simple tied-back hair and elegant makeup and jewelry. Her bold statement was definitely one of the best that night.
Michelle Yeoh wearing Elie Saab
Michelle Yeoh brought glamour and grace to the red carpet in her Elie Saab gown. The structured off-the-shoulder dress was completed with stunning gold embroidery and bright sequins. Yeoh finished the look off with giant jewels, a classic blowout and simple makeup. Yeoh’s elegance was unmatched, making her spot on our list obvious.
Nicholas Hoult wearing Dior and Joe Alwyn wearing Tom Ford
Although “The Favourite” went largely unawarded during the show, the movie’s stars won big on the red carpet. Nicholas Hoult and costar Joe Alwyn wore creative yet subdued takes on the traditional tuxedo, with Hoult wearing an all-black sash jacket by Dior and Alwyn in a black velvet jacket by Tom Ford. The pair donned some of the most refined outfits of the night.
Regina King wearing Oscar de la Renta
Before winning the Best Supporting Actress award for her beautiful performance in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Regina King stunned the red carpet in her equally beautiful gown. Between the high slit, sophisticated jewelry and powerful stance, King emanated confidence and power. The simple white color emphasized the elegant structure of the dress and was complemented by her simple hair and makeup. King was a winner in more ways than one at this year’s Oscars!
Amy Poehler wearing Alberta Ferretti
While Amy Poehler is known for her quirky personality and sense of humor, she served serious sophistication on the red carpet. Poehler ditched the traditional gown for a sleek suit by Alberta Ferretti. The all-black look included a ruffled shirt underneath a matching jacket, as well as long pants and a sparkling brooch. Poehler matched the suit with dark eye makeup and tied-back hair, staying true to her outfit’s polished vibe.
Chadwick Boseman wearing Givenchy
Chadwick Boseman has proven himself to be a red carpet star across this awards season, and the Oscars are no exception. Boseman wore a custom Givenchy Haute Couture jacket with a floor-length tail. The look was embellished with sequins and completed with plain black shoes. While Boseman took a risk with this off-kilter suit, he ended up being one of the most eye-catching stars at the show.
