Berkeley police investigate cellphone theft in South Berkeley

A woman’s cellphone was stolen Friday, according to a community alert sent by Berkeley Police Department on Monday evening.

A 21-year-old woman seated on a bench on Shattuck Avenue near Oregon Street was using her cellphone when a suspect ran up to her and grabbed it from her hands at 3:19 p.m. on Friday.

The suspect ran into a black sedan and drove off, according to the alert. The alert also said witnesses described the suspect as a Black man, about 20 years old with a thin build and short, dark hair.
