APRIL 18, 2019

Every year, April 20, commonly referred to as “420,” is commemorated as the day of cannabis. Originating from Marin County, the concept of 420 is native to the Bay Area — making it a fundamental part of Berkeley’s culture. To celebrate this Saturday in true 420 fashion, we at the Clog have weeded out four films that’ll make for one dope time.

“Pineapple Express”

This comedy from 2008 starring Seth Rogen as Dale Denton and James Franco as his dealer, documents one wild adventure that you’re going to want to come along for. Denton’s affinity for a rare strain called Pineapple Express has a crooked police officer and a perilous drug lord chasing after him. You’ll be laughing so much that you’re not “ganja” believe that this cult stoner classic has an esteemed Golden Globe nomination to its name.

“The Big Lebowski”

When Jeffrey ‘The Dude’ Lebowski, portrayed by Jeff Bridges, gets mistaken for the affluent Jeffrey Lebowski, he finds himself stuck in the status and wealth-driven world of Malibu where he must evade tons of manipulation. This 1998 film makes a blunt commentary on the hollowness that money and power create, leaving you highly entertained throughout its duration.

“Dazed and Confused”

If these two words perfectly describe your college experience, you should know that they also perfectly sum up the coming-of-age story of the teens at Lee High School. The film’s ensemble cast is quite a famous bunch with names like Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck and Milla Jovovich in its credits. From scenes that include budding heads to the the formation of best buds, “Dazed and Confused” hits the jack pot for your 420 celebration criteria.

“Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle”

Although there’s no White Castle in Berkeley to drive to, you can have the next best thing by watching this stoner comedy that chronicles a journey to the chain establishment. Starring UC Berkeley alumnus John Cho, this movie has a Berkeley connection that confirms it as a must-watch for the weekend. If you find yourself craving burgers after watching, you can always grab a bite at the nearby Super Duper Burgers on Telegraph Avenue.

Grab yourself some buds and watch one of these films for a guaranteed high time. School can be highly stressful for both stoners and nonsmokers alike, so take the edge off this semester by sitting back and relaxing to one of these beloved comedies.
