Pair of incoming freshmen confirm intent to join Cal men’s basketball

Joel Brown and D.J. Thorpe, a pair of incoming freshmen who committed to Cal men’s basketball under former head coach Wyking Jones, have both announced on Twitter that they will remain committed to the program.

Brown and Thorpe announcing their intent to remain committed to Cal comes in the aftermath of Charles Smith IV requesting a release from his national letter of intent.

Of the pair, Brown was the first to declare he’s staying put, posting on Twitter that he was “HERE TO STAY.” Thorpe followed suit, writing in a Tweet: “If we’re in the business of reaffirming…I’m all in.”

Brown and Thorpe remaining committed is a positive development for a program that has had an otherwise shaky offseason. In addition to Smith de-committing, Darius McNeill announced that he will be transferring to Southern Methodist University, while Justice Sueing, Connor Vanover, Juhwan Harris-Dyson and Roman Davis are all in the NCAA transfer portal.
