Cal women’s basketball sophomore guard McKenzie Forbes said via Twitter that she has asked for her release from the team in order to explore options elsewhere in light of former head coach Lindsay Gottlieb’s resignation and reappointment with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I have nothing but good things to say about the Cal women’s basketball program and consider them my extended family. In light of the departure of the (head coach) who recruited me, as well as coach Charmin Smith, I have asked for my release to explore my options moving forward,” Forbes wrote.

Forbes was slated to be a key piece of the team’s puzzle entering her sophomore season. She played in 33 games last season, scoring an average of 5.5 points and tallying 1.5 rebounds per game.
