Update 6/24/2019: This article has been updated to include information from Berkeley City College.

According to a tweet from Berkeley City College, or BCC, a background investigator who was affiliated with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, or DHS, and under contract with ADC visited BCC on Monday. The individual claimed he was conducting a “routine employee background check.”

The DHS background investigator was previously identified as an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, according to a BCC employee who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons. The BCC employee reported that the DHS background investigator was at BCC’s financial aid office about 2 p.m. Monday requesting a student’s information.

According to the BCC employee, the DHS background investigator disclosed that they were an ICE agent and that they were requesting information on a student. When another staff member would not give them the information, the DHS background investigator went to another department, where they were still unable to get the student’s information, according to the anonymous employee.

Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Officer Byron White said BPD was not in contact with ICE.
