On Friday, an attempted laptop theft took place at Romeo’s Coffee, located on Telegraph Avenue.
According to Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Officer Byron White, two juvenile suspects entered the café and allegedly attempted to steal laptops. White added that patrons tackled one of the suspects, allowing him to be apprehended, while the other escaped.
“Laptop theft and electronic theft has been a constant challenge in the city of Berkeley, particularly because there’s a student population here and they carry laptops and electronics,” White said. “Some suspects are taking advantage of the higher density of students here.”
Co-owner of Romeo’s Coffee Dino Micheletti said an incident such as this has not happened in the two years the café has been open, adding that he wants Romeo’s Coffee to be a safe environment.
Micheletti said he was glad that no one was harmed during the incident.
“In the end you see all genders, old and young, everyone reaching out,” Micheletti said. “This tells me there’s still faith out there, there’s still hope. People still help each other and want to do good. That’s why the story is so good, the hope and the kindness of people.”
