A power outage hit Berkeley on Wednesday night, affecting a large part of the city and parts of Oakland, especially areas north of 13th Street and near the south side of the UC Berkeley campus, according to PG&E spokesperson J.D. Guidi.

According to Guidi, the outage affected 3,130 PG&E customers in Berkeley and 12 in Oakland. The cause of the outage is still under investigation.

“We will work safely and quickly … until the cause is determined,” Guidi said.

Guidi said that as of 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, about half of the customers had gotten their power restored, leaving 1,534 customers still out of power.

According to a Nixle alert sent out by Berkeley Police Department at 7:19 p.m. Wednesday, signal lights at some intersections “may not be working.” The alert cautioned those driving through the area to treat affected intersections like four-way intersections with stop signs.
