Following the Cal football 20-19 victory over the Washington Huskies in Seattle, the team’s co-captain and inside linebacker Evan Weaver was named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week.

In the teams’ last two matchups, the Huskies have reached the endzone just twice. Weaver’s final statline on Saturday evening included 18 tackles (14 solo), two tackles for loss and one forced fumble, which was recovered by Cal.

Combined with his 11 tackles in the team’s season-opening win against UC Davis, Weaver’s 29 total tackles ranks second in the FBS, trailing the 34 mark currently set by San Jose State linebacker Ethan Aguayo.

Already named a preseason nominee for multiple national awards, it’s safe to say Weaver and the Bears’ defense are off and rolling in 2019.
