Former UC Berkeley student Yahn Bruggeman has been charged with assault, terrorist threats and two counts of stalking, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

According to court documents, on Feb. 11, 2018, the victim and Bruggeman were at his fraternity house when Bruggeman allegedly asked her if she liked to be choked. The woman indicated she felt uncomfortable and shortly after Bruggeman allegedly choked her “until she could not breathe.”

Minutes later, Bruggeman allegedly slapped and choked the woman again as she repeatedly told him to stop. According to court documents, the woman was able to leave the fraternity house once Bruggeman fell asleep. After the incident, the woman told Bruggeman not to contact her again.

According to court documents, Bruggeman texted the woman, describing himself as a rapist, which he said in the texts was an “underrepresented minority.” On Sept. 9, Bruggeman sent the victim a text message threatening rape.

According to court documents, Bruggeman was placed under arrest on Sept. 12 after the victim and her friends saw him on campus, although he no longer attends UC Berkeley and does not live in the Berkeley area. The victim believed Bruggeman came to find her.

According to court documents, the victim believed Bruggeman was stalking another former friend of his who is a student within the UC system.

“During the investigation, a second victim came forward and reported that Yahn Bruggeman had been stalking him as well,” said Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Officer Byron White in an email. “On September 16th, Yahn Bruggeman was again arrested for stalking.”

Bruggeman has been placed on probation out of Alameda County after being booked into the Berkeley City Jail, according to court documents.

According to Alameda County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Ray Cásarez, Bruggeman is due in court Oct. 22.
