Power outage affects large portion of East Bay, including Berkeley

A power outage beginning Sunday morning has affected a large portion of the East Bay, including parts of Berkeley and UC Berkeley residence halls.

The outages began around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, with 18 occurring in Berkeley that have affected 148 customers, according to the PG&E website’s outage map.

Berkeley Police Department released a Nixle alert Sunday warning of a “major power outage in Berkeley,” causing traffic signals to be non-functional. The alert advised motorists to stop at all intersections and proceed when safe.

Campus residence halls have also been affected by the outage, though power is expected to be restored around 11 a.m., according to the alert.

The largest outage occurred in El Cerrito, where 11 outages have affected 39,519 customers, according to the map.
