On Friday, the Cal women’s basketball team received its first verbal commitment for the 2020 recruiting class in 5-star prospect Fatou Samb.

Samb hails from Westside High School in Houston, and is ranked by ESPN as the sixth best post player in her class and 53rd overall. At 6’3”, Samb brings quick footwork to her post-up offense and has mobility in the transition game.

A July 2019 review of Samb says she is a “skilled low-post prospect with efficient interior game; post up game yields results; defends in the paint, rebounds and initiates the fast break; mobile in transition game; emerges [as] elite front court prospect in the class of 2020.”

This first commitment from a top-60 player is definitely a step in the right direction for Smith and the Bears.

Samb also considered Harvard, Michigan, Wake Forest and Rice before making her commitment.
