Less than 24 hours until kickoff against Washington State, Cal football revealed its starting quarterback for the game: redshirt junior Devon Modster.

Modster, who missed the Bears’ 35-0 road loss against Utah with an undisclosed injury, has started two games this season, and has appeared in four games. He competed against true freshman Spencer Brasch this week in practice for the starting opportunity, as both quarterbacks were previously listed as sharing the No. 1 position atop the team’s depth chart.

Since Chase Garbers’ injury against Arizona State on Sept. 27, Modster and Brasch have struggled to lead the offense, combining for just two passing touchdowns and four interceptions. Garbers remains listed as “out long-term” with a lingering potential to return later this season.

The Bears and Cougars will kickoff at 4 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks

The Bears have been backed up quite a bit on second and third downs over their past four games, which won’t get the job done when the margin for error is razor-thin against Pac-12 competition.
