Cal Poly Athletics announced Friday that Cal football running backs coach Nicholas Edwards will move on to become the offensive coordinator for Cal Poly’s football program, joining recently departed offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin’s staff.
“I’m really excited for Nick,” said Cal head coach Justin Wilcox. “He’s done a great job for us. He is a young guy in the profession and has a bright future. I know our players and other coaches appreciate what he’s done here.”
Edwards arrived in 2017 and departs after spending three seasons at UC Berkeley as a wide receivers and running backs coach. His promotion to Cal Poly per Baldwin wasn’t a surprise, as the pair have now spent 11 seasons together on the gridiron — ever since Edwards walked on to the Baldwin-led Eastern Washington football team in 2008.
He will be taking over an offense that ranked dead last in the Big Sky Conference in passing and tenth in total yardage. The Mustangs haven’t had a winning season since 2016, and the appointment of Edwards will provide some much needed stability for Cal Poly.
Baldwin and Edwards led a Bears rushing attack that ranked 105th overall to end the 2019 regular season. Both individuals will be returning to the Big Sky after leaving Eastern Washington in early 2017.
