Can’t contain the run: The Bears have struggled to limit the Illini’s rushing offense, allowing 120 yards on 22 attempts. That’s more rushing yards then they allowed total against North Texas, Oregon State, UC Davis, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington State each.
Spreading the ball around: Sophomore quarterback Chase Garbers has distributed the ball up and down Cal’s roster, targeting six different receivers for 13 receptions and 194 yards. Among those who caught a pass for the Bears was tight end Collin Moore, whose touchdown pass was the first of his career.
Makai Polk’s big half: True freshman Makai Polk exploded out of the gate, catching five passes for 105 yards. In the first half alone, Polk has surpassed his career high in receptions and yards.
Weaver watch: While not on pace to beat the NCAA record for total tackles, first team All-American linebacker Evan Weaver tied the Pac-12 record for tackles in a season with 176. One tackle in the second half would make Weaver the sole record owner.
‘Earn it’ Moments
Cal WR Nikko Remigio laid his body on the line to catch a 25 yard pass on 3rd and 10 that saved a Bears’ drive that ultimately led to their third touchdown.
Justin Wilcox’s gutsy call to keep his offense on the field on fourth and goal led to a three-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to Christopher Brown Jr.
First half MVP
Garbers has had arguably his best half of the season, completing 13 of his 16 pass attempts for 194 yards and three total touchdowns. The Bears are 6-0 when Chase Garbers starts and finishes the game for Cal.
