Among the over 480,000 individuals who have worked for a spot in NCAA athletics, the opportunity to create a livelihood through their sport — to finally become a professional — is reserved for only the best. After four years at Cal, alumna Abi Kim saw her efforts in blue and gold bear fruit in the 2020 National Women’s Soccer League Draft.
Kim was selected 26th overall by the Orlando Pride, marking the end of a collegiate career that featured 18 goals and a hatful of accolades, including one selection apiece to the All-Pac-12 second team and third team, two selections to the All-Region third team and a national cap for the U-20 USWNT in the U-20 Women’s World Cup.
She will share the pitch in Orlando with fellow Cal alum Alex Morgan, who has plied her trade in the Sunshine State since 2016. Preseason for the NWSL will start in the spring, and Kim will have her eyes set on more professional and national team success when the ball gets rolling this year.
