2 bank robberies occur in Downtown Berkeley

The Mechanics Bank and the Wells Fargo Bank on Shattuck Avenue were robbed Tuesday afternoon.

According to Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Officer Byron White, Mechanics Bank was first robbed around noon. The suspect, who was described as a 30-year-old Black male wearing a long gray shirt, demanded money through a note and fled the scene with cash. He was last seen on Solano Avenue.

Later that afternoon at about 2 p.m., an adult Black man, wearing a blue sweater with a red hood demanded money from the Wells Fargo Bank then left the bank. He was described to be short in height with a heavy build by White.
