Cal defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander announced via Twitter that he will be making the move to the NFL after three seasons with the Bears. Multiple sources have stated that he will be heading to be the defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins, a team that Alexander spent time with during its training camp. Alexander was instrumental in turning the Cal secondary into a national powerhouse, with its peak in 2018 when the Bears finished the season 25th in passing yards allowed per game nationally and fifth in interceptions.
The highly regarded coach is known for his ability to connect with players, and Cal head coach Justin Wilcox will have his work cut out in finding a replacement. There is potential for Alexander to reunite with one of his former players, as safeties Ashtyn Davis and Jaylinn Hawkins are entered in the 2020 NFL draft.
