Returning to the spotlight after a massively successful comeback last year, the sibling trio known as the Jonas Brothers produced a catchy, lighthearted tune for the band’s first single of 2020, “What A Man Gotta Do.” Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas masterfully captured the essence of romantic nostalgia by creating an irresistibly fun piece of pop music.
Essentially, the single covers the brothers questioning what they must accomplish in order for their love interests to be completely committed to them. The lyrics of the single may be simple, but the brothers don’t have to say much to illustrate just how lucky they are to have found solid partners.
Upbeat percussion paired with intense, rhythmic guitar sequences drives “What A Man Gotta Do” along in a soulful manner, as if the song was playing in the background of an ’80s romantic comedy scene. “What a man gotta do?/ What a man gotta prove?” the trio pleads in the infectious drum- and- tambourine-heavy chorus as they demonstrate just how far they’re willing to go to be their lovers’ “last goodnight and first good day.”
Continuing a tradition of jaw-dropping visuals, this high-energy track was accompanied by an equally electrifying blockbuster music video co-starring their significant others: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sophie Turner and Danielle Jonas. Directed by Joseph Kahn, the Jonas Brothers manage to make their own savvy, satirical and sexy references to three classic films: “Risky Business,” “Grease” and “Say Anything…”
The tasteful music video opens with Nick mimicking Tom Cruise’s iconic dance scene from “Risky Business.” Holding a candlestick like a microphone, he mouths the words to “What A Man Gotta Do” toward Priyanka, who tries and fails to hold back a laugh.
The camera pans to Joe and Turner, who got all greased-up to play Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson in their version of “Born to Hand Jive” from the National Dance-Off scene in “Grease.” Turner even does a switch-up halfway into the music video to rock a Cha-Cha DiGregorio-inspired leather outfit, swapping her blonde curls for a black wig.
The audience later focuses on Kevin, portraying John Cusack’s “Say Anything…” character, Lloyd, by serenading Danielle outside of her bedroom window with a boombox. When the cassette’s tape comes off the reel, Kevin is forced to give the 1989 movie a 2020 spin, playing the single from his cellphone.
It’s safe to assume that “What A Man Gotta Do” is signaling a new era for the Jonas Brothers after the band’s whirlwind success in 2019. After announcing a reunion last February, Nick, Kevin and Joe went on to release the documentary “Chasing Happiness,” drop their fifth album, Happiness Begins, and go on a worldwide tour. Needless to say, we’re totally locked up by the Jonas Brothers, but what a fan gotta do?
