A person on Berkeley train tracks was hit and killed by an Amtrak train going to Bakersfield on Sunday.

The collision occurred at roughly 6:06 p.m., according to Amtrak spokesperson Beth Toll. The train was Amtrak’s San Joaquins 718 train, which was traveling from Oakland to Bakersfield.

None of the 27 passengers aboard the 718 were injured, Toll added, and Amtrak police cooperated with various Alameda County departments to investigate the collision further.

“All individuals should exercise caution around railroad tracks and crossings,” Toll said in an email. “Each year, about 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide.”

The incident occurred just over a year after two men were hit and killed on Berkeley tracks by an Amtrak train.
