BART will no longer sell paper tickets at its stations and will instead offer only Clipper as the fare product available for purchase.
The systemwide transition was completed by BART last week in an effort to provide a more contactless experience for riders during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a BART press release. Though the transition to Clipper-only sales started in August 2019 with a four-station pilot program, BART converted one or more stations each week throughout 2020 due to the pandemic.
Clipper allows riders to avoid direct contact with fare gates, according to the press release. Riders also avoid contact with fare machines if they load their card online at least one day prior.
Though no longer available for purchase, customers can still use paper tickets to enter or exit fare gates. Riders will be able to add enough fare using fare machines to exit the paid area. The press release noted that for customers with more than $1 remaining on a paper ticket, a BART station agent will help process a ticket refund.
