For a number of Berkeley and Alameda County residents of ages 75 and older, the wait for the COVID-19 vaccine will soon be over following the opening of a drive-through vaccination site in Albany.

The site, which will be in operation from Feb. 5-8, is offering a limited number of vaccination appointments for those most at risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19, according to a city press release Wednesday.

In coordination with Curative Inc., Berkeley will be vaccinating those who have made appointments through Curative’s website and are in need of their first dose. The press release adds that those vaccinated will be entered into Curative’s notification system for second appointments.

“For Berkeley residents who need physical assistance with mobility to get to the site, a ride service supported by the City can help some people get to their appointments for a $15 fee,” the press release states.

The press release notes that vaccinations are limited and that those unable to book an appointment this time around should sign up for notification lists based on their eligibility.

It adds that both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are safe, free and “highly effective” at around 95% efficacy.

“Each vaccination helps build up our resilience to the virus,” the press release states. “Everyone – even those who are vaccinated – need to wear masks and avoid gatherings.”

In time, the press release adds, everyone will have access to the vaccine. Until then, it is important to continue wearing masks, avoiding gatherings and protecting the community.
