In response to community interest and in order comply with state law, Berkeley Police Department released a community briefing video Saturday regarding a police shooting that took place Jan. 2.

At 8:40 p.m., an officer responded to a report of an alleged robbery at Walgreens on Shattuck Avenue, in which the suspect, 51-year-old Vincent Bryant, brandished a 13-foot metal chain, according to a BPD Nixle alert. After the officer located the suspect in the courtyard of UC Berkeley’s Tang Center, Bryant allegedly pulled out his chain and threatened the officer, the community briefing video states.

The officer then called for backup, and those arriving formed a perimeter around the courtyard in an attempt to detain the suspect, according to the video. The alert states that when Bryant allegedly ignored the officers’ orders to drop the chain and advanced toward them, the officers discharged their less-than-lethal foam munitions and BPD officer Madison Albrandt discharged her firearm.

Bryant was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. The alert adds that he was charged with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and resist of an executive officer.

While Albrandt has placed been on administrative leave, BPD’s homicide detail and internal affairs detail are investigating the incident.

“The investigations are intended to gather all information to determine whether the officer’s actions fell within applicable law and department policy,” the alert reads. “Once completed and reviewed, the full investigations will be available to the public.”
