Working and studying from home have unlocked my barista skills. I recently watched a TikTok that showed me a cool way to enjoy one of my favorite drinks — the strawberry matcha latte. This drink is especially difficult to find around me, so I knew I needed to try it for myself. Here’s what I learned!

Ingredients

  • 5 medium-sized strawberries
  • Ice cube trays
  • ¼ tsp of matcha powder
  • ¼ cup of boiling water
  • ¾-1 cup choice of milk
  • Sugar to taste (optional)

Directions

Make the strawberry puree

Start by cutting off the leaf hats of the strawberries. Then, slice and dice the strawberries down into little bits. Making the puree is where you can use different methods. Some people blend up their strawberries with a food processor or handheld blender — I just used a mortar and pestle. I found this easy given the soft texture that strawberries already have. After that, you can add sugar if you would like.

Freeze the ice cubes

Once you’ve mushed down the strawberries into a bright red puree, pour that into your ice trays. Mine are cube-shaped, but you can get fancy with all of the different options available! Finally, pop them in the freezer to let them do their thing. I opted to leave mine overnight!

Prep the matcha

I sifted the matcha into a bowl and then added the boiling water. Make sure to whisk the matcha from side to side. Here, you can add a pinch (or more, I won’t judge) of sugar to taste. Once you’re left with a yummy, dark green liquid, you can set this aside in the fridge.

Assemble the drink

When you’re ready to put everything together, grab your glass! First, add your frozen puree ice cubes and then your choice of milk (mine is oat milk, and shoutout to you if yours is as well)! Pour the matcha mixture that you made earlier over the ice cubes and milk. Then, stir and enjoy!

At first, I was definitely intimidated by this multi-step, prep-heavy recipe. But, as a self-proclaimed matcha lover, I knew I had to give it a try. Once I got it down, it became super easy to replicate, and I ended up making larger batches for future cravings. I’ve appreciated mixing up my at home caffeine order, and I hope you guys try it out and love it, too!
