Following the historic confirmation of Haas School of Business professor emerita Janet Yellen last month, the U.S. Senate confirmed former Goldman School of Public Policy professor Jennifer Granholm as the U.S. Secretary of Energy on Thursday.
Granholm, who previously served as attorney general and, later, governor of Michigan, was confirmed along bipartisan lines in a vote of 64-35. As the energy secretary, Granholm will oversee 17 national laboratories, along with multiple energy research initiatives, according to a Berkeley News press release.
Prior to her confirmation, Granholm worked as a senior research fellow at the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute. Granholm will be the third Goldman School faculty member to serve in a presidential cabinet post after campus professor Robert Reich and former UC president Janet Napolitano, according to the press release.
