Berkeley Police Department officers arrested two men, including one repeat offender, on suspicion of attempted grand theft of a catalytic converter Friday.

At 12:04 a.m., BPD received a report of two individuals trying to steal a catalytic converter of a parked vehicle near Shattuck Avenue and Ashby Avenue, according to a BPD Nixle alert. Responding officers found two men seated in a vehicle parked directly across the victim’s vehicle and heard a police radio scanner coming from the suspects’ vehicle.

Officers saw a floor jack and reciprocating saw in plain view inside the vehicle, and also discovered common tools used in catalytic converter thefts after conducting a search of the suspects’ vehicle. This included two reciprocating saws, vehicle jacks, 10 saw blades and a cordless drill. Officers also found roughly half an ounce of methamphetamine.

One of the suspects was identified as a 39-year-old man previously arrested on suspicion of attempted grand theft of a catalytic converter, according to the alert. He and the other suspect, a 44-year-old Oakland man, were also arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy to commit a crime.
