Running to become the second transfer representative in ASUC history, Student Action candidate Jake Mehari dropped out of the race.
Mehari was the sole candidate under Student Action running for the position and was vying for the seat against independent candidate Gabriel Alfaro, who is running with the newly formed ElevateCal coalition. As of press time, Mehari could not be reached for comment.
The transfer representative position appeared for the first time on the 2020 ASUC elections ballot, and although holding the same responsibilities as senators, the seat is distinct from senate and executive positions. It was created to bring the transfer student voice into ASUC Senate, and more broadly, campus discussions.
A first semester-transfer student, Mehari realized he was no longer interested in becoming transfer representative early on in the election process, according to Student Action, who respects his decision. Alfaro is now running unopposed for the position, hoping to institutionalize advocacy for transfer students.
ASUC elections will be held virtually from April 5 to April 7.
