Berkeley Police Department officers arrested a man outside La Quinta Inn on University Avenue during a traffic stop Monday night.
At 11:44 p.m., BPD received a report of a man armed with a gun in the parking lot outside the hotel, according to a BPD Nixle alert. Responding officers were assigned as part of a specialized traffic unit funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
After arriving at the hotel, officers identified a vehicle leaving the parking lot that matched the description of a vehicle associated with the suspect. The officers then initiated a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle code violation and searched the vehicle based on probable cause, the alert added.
Officers found a handgun without a serial number, also known as a “ghost gun,” during the search, according to the alert. The suspect, a 22-year-old Oakland man, admitted to owning the gun and was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm with a high-capacity magazine and carrying a concealed firearm.
