A two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon in the area of Marin Avenue and Spruce Street resulted in two deaths and a damaged power pole.

At 1:39 p.m., Berkeley Police Department emergency personnel responded to a reported collision on Marin Avenue between Spruce Street and San Benito Street, according to a BPD alert. A woman in a four-door sedan was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, and the driver of the sedan later died at a local hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 42-year-old mother from Kensington, was taken to the same hospital to be treated for moderate injuries, according to the alert. The woman had been accompanied by her 3-year-old daughter, who was not harmed in the collision.

“Due to the severity of the collision, the Department’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation and will remain at the scene for the next few hours,” the alert reads.

A power pole was also damaged by the collision, the alert noted, and PG&E has estimated that roughly 1,000 area residents will be impacted by repairs in the next few hours.

The alert asks anyone with information about the collision to contact BPD at 510-981-5900.
