The Berkeley Fire Department and Berkeley Police Department responded to a structure fire at 2901 Channing Way early Monday morning.

While BFD focused on extinguishing the blaze, BPD officers directed nearby residents to evacuate the area at 12:34 a.m., according to BPD spokesperson Officer Byron White. Officers later determined that the fire began in a port-a-potty east of the residence, White added.

BPD officers are investigating the case as an incident of arson, according to White. Surveillance recordings suggested that the person who allegedly started the fire was a Black man between 50 and 60 years old with “a medium build, balding hair, wearing a red jacket and gray pants,” White said.
